20.00 – 21.30 The road to JUSTICE
Venue: Holiday Inn Hotel, Oxford
Hear first hand from the producers and directors
JUSTICE was inspired by the real-life experiences of civil rights
lawyers, including writer/director/producer Jeanne-Marie Almonor.
Ms. Almonor grew up in inner-city Brooklyn, went to Harvard Law
School,
and joined a corporate law firm in Minneapolis.
After a few years, she left the firm to start a civil rights law
practice with her husband and fellow Harvard Law grad, John Shulman.
For more than a decade, the couple has fought on the front lines in
the battle for social and economic justice. Ms. Almonor and Mr.
Shulman made JUSTICE to expose the truth about the American criminal
justice system, where racial disparities in arrest rates, charges,
convictions and incarceration have
put 1 in 10 African-American men aged 25-29 in prison (compared to 1
in 100 white men).

Set in Cuba at the beginning of the 19th century, Roble de Olor tells
a story inspired by the lives of Cornelio Souchay, a German merchant
recently arrived on the island, and Ursula Lambert, a freed Black
slave from Haiti. Despite being from such different cultures, and the
social and racial barriers that separate them, a strong attraction
arises, and thus a tale of love challenges the taboos and power
structures of their time. Starring Lia Chapman, Jorge Perugorria (Guantanamera,
Strawberry & Chocolate) and Ruben Breñas.
