The UK First Ever
National Parents and Black Boys Conference
The National Black Boys Can Association, a Theos Hodos Limited project,
will be holding a ground breaking National Conference for Parents and
Black Boys at the Emmanuel Conference Centre, Westminster,
London on Saturday 17th September 2005.
Around 1000 delegates are expected to attend this event with financial
support from the Department for Education and Skills, and sponsorship
from the Church of God of Prophecy, The New Nation Newspaper and
Barclays Bank.
Key Speakers at the event include Sir Bill Morris O.J, The Rt Hon David
Lammy MP and many more.
The conference entitled “Raising Aspirations and Achievement“will
take a holistic approach to raising Black Boys aspirations and
achievement. It will feature presentations, workshops and discussions on
such matters as education, behavioural challenges, youth culture,
parenting etc and will be led by some of the leading black academics,
speakers and performers in the UK, including Carver Anderson, Dr Tony
Sewell, Melvin Davies and many more.
Cheron Byfield, Chairperson for the National Black Boys Can Association
says “For the first time, many of the leading black people across the
UK have come together in this fashion. There is now a groundswell desire
for innovation, leadership, partnership and success in educating,
parenting and supporting Black boys. I have been humbled by the calibre
of individuals who want to work with us, support us, wish us well and
are doing so. This includes politicians, celebrities, academics,
mainstream education, churches, community leaders, parents and
ultimately Black boys… they are with us all the way.
This conference will also incorporate the presentation of two categories
of the annual Black Boys Can National Awards, i.e. the Black Boys of
Distinction awards and the Parents of Distinction Awards.
These prestigious awards are designed to recognise and celebrate Black
boys achievements and the contributions their parents have made to their
success. We particularly welcome nominations for academic achievement,
behavioural improvements and social achievements.

MOVE OVER BOB GELDOF - AJA’S HERE
United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Spokesman on Peace and Poverty
for Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, performance poet, humanitarian
and photographer, AJA will be in England to launch his e-Book and to
participate in the 3rd Annual International Black Media Festival in
Oxford.
AJA will launch the e-Book entitled “Don’t Let Me Die” on
Tuesday 4th October at the Barbados High
Commission from 7.30pm – 9.30pm. The e-Book is
a volume of poems, perspectives and photographs that captures the human
suffering caused by war, social decay, poverty and HIV-AIDS,
particularly on children.
Between 2003 and 2004, AJA visited a number of war-torn and
poverty-stricken countries, where he took the photographs for the
e-Book. The national television station of Barbados, the Caribbean
Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) also made a documentary of the
humanitarian tour. Entitled “Don’t Let Them Die: The Journey of AJA” it
features six 30-minute episodes of the countries he visited.
AJA will present episodes of the documentary at the 3rd Annual
International Black Media Festival in Oxford on Saturday 8th October.
His presentation is entitled Evolutionary Poet: Finding Media to tell
the Story" and will feature a 30-minute excerpt of “Don’t Let Them Die:
The Journey of AJA”; the 30-minute episode on Haiti; and a reading of
some of his works.
Mr. Herbie Yearwood, Barbados Deputy High Commissioner, said, “We are
honoured to be hosting the launch of AJA’s e-book at the High
Commission. AJA is truly a talented and inspirational person. His
commitment and dedication to his art form, and the charity he founded
the International Foundation for Peace and Poverty Eradication (IFPPE):

Pamela Roberts, Founder and Festival Director, said, “I am delighted to
be working in association with the Barbados High Commission to host the
launch of AJA’s E-book and to have AJA attend the festival. It gives an
opportunity for black people and the wider society to see that we have
our own very strong role models, especially in the Caribbean, who are
making a positive contribution to the war on poverty and HIV-AIDS.
Barbadian artist, AJA ( Adisa Jelani Andwele) is one of the leading
exponents of performance poetry in the Caribbean. From his emergence as
a poet in the 1980’s AJA has focused on many of the world’s problems.
The themes of his work include war, social decay and economic
suppression, and in particular their impact on children.
The 3rd Annual International Black Media Festival
The International Black Media Festival takes place in the historical and
academic city of Oxford from the Thursday 6th – Sunday 9th October 2005,
with a dynamic programme of events and screenings which includes the
gala reception and screening of JUSTICE, screenings from Africa,
America, Caribbean and the UK, a digital media conference, panel
debates, open submission strand for young directors, its educational
programme for young people - Dare to Dream and its signature closing
event; the classic Sunday Jazz brunch screenings.

The 3rd
Annual International Black Media Festival:
Breaking the Illusions takes place from
Thursday 6th October – Sunday 9th
October in the historic and academic city of Oxford.
The festival features a dynamic programme of events: the official
gala reception and European Premiere of JUSTICE. Made by civil
rights lawyers, JUSTICE stars Roger Guenveur Smith as an ambitious
lawyer out to change a corrupt legal system. JUSTICE received the
grand prize as overall 2005 Spaghetti Junction Urban Film Festival
Winner in Atlanta. The 2005 Dallas Juneteenth Festival has honored
JUSTICE with a special Emancipation Series screening and award.
Dare to Dream a session aimed at, though not exclusively, young
people from the ages of 11-16 years, and looks at the opportunities
available in the broadcast and film industry. The session showcases
careers and routes into the film and television industry outlining
what skills, attributes, qualifications and work experience are
required.
Dare to Dream also includes a motivational aspect, with
presentations and exercises to encouraged participants to consider
of what preparation they can start to implement to achieve their
aims, objectives and desired goals; a Digital Media conference
exploring the new applications of digital media, its impact and
opportunities for independent filmmakers to produce and distribute
their work.
FREE Make a short film in a day: A one day introduction into
filmmaking; hosted by BBC’s Video Nation programme. Learn the basic
of producing and directing a short film, shoot the footage in and
around Oxford, edit the footage, hopefully, in time, for screening
at the Phoenix Cinema; FREE animation workshops for young people.
Up and coming directors showcase their work in the Hot Shots short
film screenings; an opportunity for you to step back in time and get
into the mood of the 70’s with the classic zone screening of BLACK
CAESAR followed by a social evening; the festival culminates with
its closing signature event; the Sunday Jazz brunch screenings; a
sumptuous African American and Caribbean buffet served whilst
enjoying a series of screenings, poetry and jazz music.

Entertainment Comedy Awards) are fast approaching, set for 12th
