2005 marks the debut of The International
Black Media Festival in Oxford. Must-see attractions for first-time visitors include the University's Bodleian Library, dating from 1427, the ceremonial Sheldonian Theatre designed by Sir Christopher Wren and a choice of six superb museums whose outstanding collections span arts, science and natural and local history. Many colleges also open their halls, chapels, cloisters and gardens to visitors - mostly in the afternoons. Much of Oxford is already familiar to devotees of TV's Inspector Morse, or the Harry Potter films, whose locations include Christ Church, New College and the Bodleian Library's Divinity School. More literary links lead to the Eagle & Child pub, where authors J.R.R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis shared "golden sessions" of literary chat and to Christ Church where mathematics don Charles Dodgson (Lewis Carroll) wrote his Alice stories for Alice Liddell, daughter of the Dean. Art in every form is thriving here. Oxford contrasts the Old Masters of the AshmoLean Museum or the Christ Church Picture Gallery with the latest cutting-edge installations at the highly-acclaimed Modern Art Oxford Prepare too for some serious shopping in independent special shops, in superb bookshops or in the Covered Market, which sells everything from live lobsters to a handmade hat! |
